However, with the advent of casinos using 7 or 8 decks of cards dealt from a shoe, many of the strategies in this book will not work well.

The best point of the book is explaining the "basic strategy" of when to hit, stand, double-down, and split pairs based on the dealer's up card.

Following the basic strategy will give the player the best odds, but is no guarantee that the player will beat the dealer. Professor Thorpe published his book in the s.

I read it in the s long before there was an Amazon. When I read it, the casinos had already gone from single-deck Blackjack to a six deck shoe.

This change was solely because of Professor Thornton book. To this day, I still hear people say that you can't count cards with a 6 deck shoe.

They say this because they labor under the mistaken belief that counting cards involves memorizing the cards that are out of the deck. In fact, counting cards had absolutely nothing to do with memorizing the cards.

When you're counting, all you're doing is keeping track of how many big cards are out of the deck versus how many small cards.

When there is a disproportionate amount of small cards out of the deck, the advantage shifts to the player. When this happens the player makes a larger bet.

When the house has the advantage, the player makes a small bet. Therefore, it doesn't matter weather it is one deck, six decks, or decks. The difference between counting with a single deck, and counting with a 6 deck shoe, is that the advantage gained from counting cards is dramatically reduced.

After I originally read Professor Thorpe's book, I crunched the numbers to determine the profitability of counting when playing with a six deck shoe.

Nevertheless, this is a very interesting book and well worth reading to learn about professors Thorpe's experiences when he took his system on the road to test it.

And, if you play a little Blackjack every once in awhile, counting will make it a little more fun. Word to the wise, get the full-sized paperback.

The mass media paperback edition is tiny. The stories might be older and the game has changed in casinos, but this was the first fundamental book to explain both basic and advanced strategies that influenced a legion of others.

The foundation of other advanced systems started here and a lot of the information is useful for reinforcement.

Just a classic book. While Thorp was far from the first person to count cards, his experience's and idea's were great. Even though single deck games now either suck or don't exist, this book is still worth it.

This is a must read for any blackjack enthusiast. System is still relevant decades later after multiple rules changes made by the gaming industry to beat Dr.

Thorp's system. Great historical view, easy to understand the probability theory. If you love blackjack, you must read this book. Doesn't include information for tables dealing from shoes up to 8 decks which is primarily what is used in Tahoe.

Also incorrect in rules as they apply to splitting pairs. During his Las Vegas casino visits Thorp frequently used disguises such as wraparound glasses and false beards.

News quickly spread throughout the gambling community, which was eager for new methods of winning, while Thorp became an instant celebrity among blackjack aficionados.

Due to the great demand generated about disseminating his research results to a wider gambling audience, he wrote the book Beat the Dealer in , widely considered the original card counting manual , [11] which sold over , copies, a huge number for a specialty title which earned it a place in the New York Times bestseller list , much to the chagrin of Kimmel whose identity was thinly disguised in the book as Mr.

Thorp's blackjack research [12] is one of the very few examples where results from such research reached the public directly, completely bypassing the usual academic peer review process cycle.

He has also stated that he considered the whole experiment an academic exercise. In addition, Thorp, while a professor of mathematics at MIT, met Claude Shannon , and took him and his wife Betty Shannon as partners on weekend forays to Las Vegas to play roulette and blackjack, at which Thorp was very successful.

The final operating version of the device was tested in Shannon's home lab at his basement in June He also devised the "Thorp count", a method for calculating the likelihood of winning in certain endgame positions in backgammon.

Since the late s, Thorp has used his knowledge of probability and statistics in the stock market by discovering and exploiting a number of pricing anomalies in the securities markets , and he has made a significant fortune.

He is currently the President of Edward O. In May , Thorp reported that his personal investments yielded an annualized 20 percent rate of return averaged over From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

Thorp focuses mostly on single deck blackjack and card counting as a strategy to gain a positive edge against the casino.

Today, his strategies on blackjack make it the best game a gambler can play in casino. The book explains the math behind the decisions presented on the card and why play is altered in certain situations.

The book explains some card counting methods. Not everyone has the attention span to be a perfect counter, but having an understanding of how the systems work makes sitting at a table more interesting and entertaining.

My only complaint with the book is some of the presentation of math at times reads like a technical paper and can get cumbersome with flipping back and forth between charts, but the information provided far outweighs some of the presentation issues.

Nov 30, Jack W Perry rated it it was amazing. If you play blackjack, you must read this book. The author, E. Thorp invented the 'basic system' that every good blackjack player memorizes.

Thorp invented and perfected card counting and the odds. Thorp actually was so effective, he changed the way casinos deal and manage blackjack.

This is the original book on blackjack. All the others are derivatives of this one. The book settings are dated would love to see an updated version but the guidelines of beating blackjack are here.

It is all here. May 27, Eric Bauman rated it really liked it Shelves: read-in When this book was published in the mid-sixties, I'm sure it created quite a storm.

I don't think it's applicable now for one simple reason: the book's system assumes there is only one deck in play.

Unless you're ultra-rich, I doubt you'll find a single-deck table anywhere. It was an interesting artifact, but I think I will need to read a more modern book to deal with the multi-deck shoe games that are extant now.

I read the most up to date version of this off Amazon and although Ed Thorp does include some updates things like casinos using 6 deck shoes now and other rule variations , most of the information is still good enough to beat the house.

Proved this with another casino trip I've only played blackjack a few times in casinos before, but a trip with a friend out of town got me back into it again and I decided to take the recommendation to get a baseline knowledge of how to win based on statistics.

Proved this with another casino trip with a friend and turned into when I left. Jan 13, Jay Pea rated it really liked it.
